Plastics industry praises Trump EPA proposal on chemical recycling
President Donald Trump’s administration is signaling that it’s open to changing regulations for chemical recycling to a position favored by the plastics industry, the latest move in a years-long back-and-forth over the rules.
The administration’s March 17 proposal, tucked inside of a bigger Environmental Protection Agency plan to “cut red tape” around permitting for incinerators, asks for input on removing “pyrolysis/combustion units” from rules for municipal waste incinerators.
The Trump EPA proposal drew praise from a plastics industry group, which said it could help clear up regulatory uncertainty it said is holding back the technology, also called advanced recycling.
“This is a key step toward improving recycling and spurring innovation in the United States while retaining strong environmental standards,” said Ross Eisenberg, president of America’s Plastic Makers, a unit of the American Chemistry Council.
“By using heat in no or low-oxygen environments, pyrolysis can convert used plastics that are difficult to recycle back into their molecular building blocks to make new products,” he said. “[The] solicitation of comment helps address the current state of regulatory uncertainty that has been a headwind to scaling advanced recycling technologies.”
